In a rush and just want my recommendation? I think the Dogbed4less Premium Memory Foam Dog Bed is a great choice.
One of the most rewarding sights is that of your tired hound, curled up and snoozing on a comfy dog bed. And dogs being dogs, after loads of outdoor adventures and fun, that bed can start to get stinky. Having a washable dog bed makes it much easier to keep your dogs sleeping quarters nice and fresh.
The best washable dog beds have inserts or fillings made of materials like polyester and cotton, which can handle many warm cycles on your washing machine. Foam bedding is a very popular option, especially memory-foam. Unfortunately this doesn’t do well in a washing machine, so a removable, washable cover is essential.
In this article, I’m reviewing the following washable dog beds.

- Furhaven – Ergonomic Contour & Plush Orthopedic L-Shaped Chaise Sofa Lounger Dog Bed

The best thing about the Super Plush Bed is how easy it is to wash and dry. There are no covers to remove, or bolsters to deal with. Just put it in your washing machine and dryer, and the job’s done.
It comes in seven sizes, all gray.
Pros:

Furhaven – Ergonomic Contour & Plush Orthopedic L-Shaped Chaise Sofa Lounger Dog Bed
The Furhaven bed comes in six sizes, accommodating dogs from chihuahua size, up to 180lb great dane size.
I like the L-shaped design with dual bolsters. It means my dog can spread out, as well as having their head supported if they want. The chaise design means it’s easier for old or injured dogs to get on and off.
The bed component is soft faux fur, while the bolsters are made from micro-suede which makes it easier to clean.
This bed comes in six sizes and three colors. The best thing about it is the choice of styles. You can choose memory foam, orthopedic foam or cooling gel foam. Be aware that there are important distinctions between these, so make sure you click on the style you want.
The poly-canvas base is durable and water resistant, and the cover is fully machine washable.
Pros:
- The foam is manufactured in the USA
- Bolsters and supportive and comfortable
- Durable
- Affordable
Cons:
- Not suitable for aggressive chewers
- Some customers report zipper breaking
Suede Dog Bed By Majestic Pet Products
This bagel shaped bed comes in four sizes and seven colors. Check the inside dimensions of the bed before you buy. You’ll want your hound to be able to snuggle down in the bottom cushion, with the option of resting their head on the bolster.
This suede dog bed has a very soft, thick cushion at 10 inches high. The bolsters are 14 inches high so very comfortable and supportive.
The base is waterproof, and the bed is fully machine washable. The larger beds may need to be hand washed unless you have a big washing machine, but these also have a removable cover.
Pros:
- Very soft and comfortable
- High quality
- Made in the USA from imported, recycled materials
- Easy to sponge clean
- Fully machine washable
Cons:
- Higher price point
- Bottom is slippery
Dogbed4less Premium Memory Foam Dog Bed
The manufacturers have packed this bed with features. It has a gel memory foam orthopedic pad which is hypoallergenic, and resistant to dust mites, mildew, mold, and bacteria.
There is a waterproof internal cover to protect the memory foam pad. This is zipped, so it can be removed for cleaning. Two external covers are also included. One durable denim cover and the other is a softer microsuede cover.
I like the 100% cotton, heavy duty, denim cover. It’s durable, made to last and fully washable.
The memory foam pad is high quality, and at 4 inches thick will provide excellent support for your dog for a long time.
The long lasting durability of this bed is a big plus for me. I wish there was a bolster though.
Pros:
- Quality materials
- Sturdy construction
- Strong zippers
- Durable and lasts a long time
Cons:
- Higher price point, but this reflects the quality of the bed
BarksBar Gray Orthopedic Dog Bed
The BarksBar Orthopedic Bed is for small and medium dogs only. The inner dimensions make it suitable for dogs up to 26 inches in length.
The non-slip rubber bottom means it’s secure on tiles and wood floors. This is a well made product, with quality materials. I like the comfortable looking bolster, which has extra padding round the rim.
The cover is removable and machine washable. The bed itself can’t be washed because of the memory foam, but spot cleaning can be done easily.
One size and one color make this a bit limited, but the quality and comfort features outweigh that for me.
Pros:
- Quality orthopedic foam base
- Easy to disassemble and clean, then reassemble
- Good zippers
- Very comfortable
Cons:
- No sizes for large dogs
Guide To Buying A Washable Dog Bed
How Often Should You Wash A Dog Bed?
Petco advises that pet bedding should be rotated at least once a week to get rid of the bacteria and allergens. In reality though, it largely depends on your dog’s health, shedding, activity levels and habits.
Unless my dog is going out into dirty areas, rolling in filth or swimming in stagnant water, I think a two weekly clean is sufficient. More if needed. One reason for this is to prolong the life of the dog bed.
How To Wash A Dog Bed
Much of this depends on the type of bed your hound has. It’s a simple process which will become easier, the more you do it.
Firstly, always read the washing instructions on the label.
Vacuum the bed first, to get rid of loose hair and dirt. Ensure that all of the zippers are closed. This will prevent the stuffing from coming out and will protect the zippers from getting damaged.
Put some pet laundry detergent into the machine. Fill the softener dispenser with 1/2 cup vinegar. If your washer doesn’t have a dispenser add the vinegar during the last rinse cycle. The vinegar is a very effective deodorizer, it’s much cheaper than most commercial products, and most importantly, is safe for your dog.
Load the cover and bed separately into the washer, or if too big use the bathtub. If you are using a laundromat, take your own supplies with you.
Use the delicate cycle if you have one. Washing in hot water can help kill any insects and eggs that may be on the bed, but if you’re not sure, do a warm wash.
If you are drying your dog’s bed in a dryer, make sure it can freely tumble. I prefer to put the bed outside to dry in the sun and fresh air. The most important thing is to make sure it is thoroughly dry before you let your hound sleep on it. If it’s still damp it won’t be good for your dog, and it will smell bad quickly.
Will Dog Hair Ruin A Washing Machine?
Leave the washer door open and let the drum and all the pet hair clinging to it, dry thoroughly. Then, using the soft brush attachment, vacuum out the pet hair. Pet hair can also get trapped in the drain pump filter, preventing your washer from draining properly.
I usually do a full wash with nothing in the machine straight after washing my dog’s bed. This ensures that any residual hair isn’t left behind to end up on my next clothes wash.
What Laundry Detergent Is Safe For Dogs?
There are many available. My personal favorite is Biokleen Bac-Out Natural Enzyme Stain and Odor Remover.
How To Keep Your Dog Bed Clean Between Washes
- Vacuum it between washes.
- Put a comfortable blanket over the bed and remove it regularly to launder.
- Occasionally wipe down the outside of the bed with a dilute mixture of water and apple cider vinegar. Not too wet, though. Put the bed somewhere it can dry properly.
Conclusion
When I purchase a dog bed, there are three things that I really want.
I need to be sure that the hound is comfy, that I can clean the bed easily, and that it will keep its form and shape for a long time.
The Dogbed4less Premium Memory Foam Dog Bed is a clear leader on all these points. My only issue is lack of a bolster, but I just adapt it by putting a narrow cushion on so my dog can have some head and neck support.
It’s a high quality bed which is durable, versatile with three covers, and easy to maintain and clean.
